4. THE UNIQUE ALOE FEROX TAPPING & HARVESTING STORY The traditional method of harvesting the aloe Ferox leaves are still performed as they were practiced for more than 200 years. The Aloe is harvested by cutting 4 to 8 of the lower leaves from the plant. Roughly between600-800 leaves are stacked in a circle to allow the yellow bitter sap to drain from the leaves. The bitter sap is collected and boiled to remove excess water and when it has cooled down it is crystallized and crushed to produce the bitter crystals. The bitter sap is also spray - dried to produce a 100% dry bitter powder. After about 2-3 days the harvested leaves are then brought to the factory for further processing. The whole leaf is squashed and pressed. The pulp is washed twice to drain the remaining bitter – to form a non-bitter jelly. The jelly is further treated and used in the aloe drink and also spray-dried to produce a 100% dry concentrated white powder suitable for the cosmetic industry. The traditional harvesting method and process is a big job creator for unskilled to highly skilled individuals. During harvesting, the Aloe plant is not damaged or killed. Cutting the bottom leaves is like a pruning process, and so stimulating the growth of a new leaf in the top part of the plant. During June/July the plant produces a bright orange flower that eventually forms many seeds. When the seed drops on the ground a new plant can grows, after 5-7 years the new plant can be harvested. A plant can age up to 50 years. The Aloe Ferox plant stores its moisture and food in its leaves during good seasons. It can survive up to 2 years without it roots being in soil. The moist containing capability of the Aloe Ferox plant is a key element available in the moisturizing and regenerating effect of our Aloe Unique skin care range.
