Valletta Streets: Victoria Gate and St Barbara's Bastions in Valletta Malta 4k Victoria Gate is a city gate in Valletta, Malta. It was built by the British who ruled over Malta back in 1885 and was named after Queen Victoria. The gate was the main entrance into the city from the Grand Harbour area, which was once the busiest part of the city. The gate is located between Marina Curtain and St. Barbara Bastion, on the site of the 16th-century Del Monte Gate. Victoria Gate is the only surviving gate within the fortifications of Valletta since all the other fortified gates were demolished between the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, the only other gate is the City Gate, which was built in 2014 to a modern design. St. Barbara Bastion was built during the 16th Century by the Knights of St. John. These bastions are part of the stone fortifications of Valletta City. Because this part of the bastion was strongly guarded by Fort St. Angelo, situated on the side of the Grand Harbour, St. Barbara bastion was not considered important enough to be assigned to the Knights of the Order of St. John. Instead, it was managed by the Association of Bombardiers (Ghaqda tal-Bumbardieri). Since the Association had St. Barbara as their patron saint, it was considered customary to name the Bastion in her honour. St. Barbara's church in Strada Reale, Valletta also bears the same name as it too was managed by the Association of Bombardiers.
