This Sudden Severe Hailstorm in Brisbane Queensland, near Ipswich starting from small hail stones and the hail and rain storm becoming more severe with larger hailstones. Hailstones in some cases hit Brisbane with sizes like golf balls damaged cars, windows, houses and gardens. South-east Queensland hit by very dangerous thunderstorms as hail up to 14cm pummels the region. Hail up to 14 centimetres has been reported at Forestdale, south of Brisbane, as parts of south-east QLD were pummelled by a series of very dangerous and "life threatening" thunderstorms this afternoon. Hail storms also battered southern Sydney and parts of the New South Wales south coast. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued warnings for people in parts of Queensland's Wide Bay, Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt regions earlier this afternoon. Hailstones the size of cricket balls swept through Regents Park, south of Brisbane. The BOM warned the situation was volatile and continuing to change quickly. The areas likely to be hit hardest stretch from the Queensland border to north of the Sunshine Coast and communities further inland. The BOM said wind gusts of 115 kilometres per hour were recorded at Cape Moreton as the south-east braces for more widespread thunderstorm activity. "While supercell situation in some areas is easing for the moment, things are volatile and dangerous storms are likely to keep firing up this evening," the bureau said. Energex said more than 44,500 homes and businesses are currently without power, most in Logan and the Gold Coast. Energex spokesperson Justin Coomber said more than 76 downed powerlines had already been reported along with 180,000 lightning strikes. "It's early days but it's looking like the major issues are high winds — we've heard of 80 kilometre an hour winds recorded and also lightning strikes," he said. Giant hail stones hit a property at Chambers Flat, near Logan after a storm cell passed over. On the Sunshine Coast, 15,000 homes are without power which will be unlikely to return until Sunday. "There will be some customers in south-east Queensland, particularly on the Sunshine Coast, who could be without power well into Sunday, as it takes quite a long time to repair this amount of damage," Mr Coomber said. "We counted 296,000 lightning strikes in south-east Queensland today … it just shows you how violent and powerful these storms have been."
