But what’s even crazier is I just read a stat that 40% of bottled water is actually just regular tap water. When you convert that to gallons, at that price 1 gallon of water equals $9.27. To put that into perspective, 1 gallon of gas typically costs $3.50. Surprising Secret #2. Better Tasting Bottled Water Does Not Mean It’s More Pure Water purity doesn’t influence the actual taste of water, the mineral concentration does. In other words, some of the biggest brands of bottled water is just city water, with added in minerals to increase the taste. Surprising Secret #3. It’s Not Necessarily Safer to Drink Bottled Water In some circumstances, most city tap water has stricter purity standards than the bottled water industry. One test found that 22% of the bottled water brands in the study contained chemicals above state limits. The chemicals to watch out for are chlorine and fluoride. What do you think will happen to the good kind of bacteria found in your gut? If your area is known for having chlorine in your tap water, it’s best to go with some sort of water filtration system. I currently use a Brita and a water filtration system from my fridge, but that may not be the best option for you if you have to filter out those heavy metals. If you have the budget, look into a reverse osmosis system for the best results. Best Water Bottle To Drink Out Of Here’s another big thing to consider when drinking bottled water. Your plastic water bottle may contain BPA. In other words, you’re potentially pumping estrogen mimicking chemicals into your body. Hello man boobs. Always avoid plastic water bottles that contain BPA, since BPA can leek into your water, especially when heated. When you have a choice, a BPA-free stainless steel insulated bottle is the best water bottle to drink out of. It’s important to focus on drinking from BPA-free water bottles. What Plastic Numbers Are Safe For Water Bottles? If you do drink from a plastic bottle, make sure you look at the plastic number inside the recycling symbol on the bottom of the water bottle. The following plastic numbers should be free of BPA, therefore are safe: 2, 4, 5 The following plastic number should be avoided: 3, 6, 7 The following plastic number indicates it’s intended for one time use only: 1 Lastly, typically the firmer the plastic used on the water bottle, the better it is. I’m not telling you to not buy bottled water, as I still buy certain brands of bottled water when I’m out. I just want you to be aware of what you’re buying. If you’re looking to save money, invest in a re-usable BPA-free stainless steel insulated water bottle. Or use glass containers, and keep it filled with filtered tap water so you can drink more water throughout the day.
